LEWIS HAMILTON DEMANDS MORE FROM FERRARI AS F1 2026 TITLE FIGHT INTENSIFIES

Lewis Hamilton questions Ferrari simulator after Miami GP as F1 2026 title fight intensifies and performance gaps remain.
Formula 1 is relentless. It doesn’t wait. It doesn’t forgive. And in F1 2026, it’s exposing every weakness, every missed opportunity, and every gap in performance. Right now, Lewis finds himself in a familiar but uncomfortable position—close enough to fight, but not quite close enough to win consistently.

After the Miami Grand Prix, the picture is clear. Lewis is level in the standings with Lando Norris, but the real target sits further ahead. Kimi Antonelli is leading the championship, and Ferrari are chasing. For Lewis, that’s not good enough. Not yet.

Because if there’s one thing we know about him in Formula 1, it’s this—he doesn’t race to participate. He races to win.

A Season Of Mixed Momentum For Lewis And Ferrari

The F1 2026 season has been a strange mix of promise and frustration for Lewis and Ferrari. There have been flashes of real pace, moments where everything clicks, and glimpses of a car capable of fighting at the very front. But there have also been weekends like Miami.

Lewis came into the race with momentum building after securing his first Ferrari podium earlier in the season. That result felt like a breakthrough—a sign that things were finally starting to come together. Yet in Miami, the performance simply wasn’t there.

He qualified sixth, behind his teammate Charles Leclerc, and although he ultimately finished higher due to Leclerc’s penalty, the race never truly felt under control. For a driver like Lewis, that’s frustrating. Not because sixth place is a bad result—but because it highlights the gap that still exists between Ferrari and the teams currently setting the pace in Formula 1.

The Championship Picture: Close, But Not Close Enough

On paper, being level with Norris in the standings doesn’t look bad. It suggests consistency. It suggests competitiveness. But Formula 1 isn’t won on paper. The real story is the gap to the front.

Antonelli, leading the championship, has been setting the benchmark. Behind him, McLaren—with Norris and Oscar Piastri—are showing strong pace and consistency. Ferrari, meanwhile, are still searching for that final piece. Lewis and Leclerc are fighting hard, but they’re not yet dictating races. They’re reacting instead of controlling.

And in a championship fight, that’s a dangerous position to be in.

Miami: A Weekend That Raised Questions

The Miami Grand Prix didn’t just expose a performance gap—it raised deeper concerns within Ferrari. Lewis wasn’t just frustrated with the result. He was frustrated with the process. Specifically, the simulator.

In modern Formula 1, the simulator is one of the most important tools a team has. It allows drivers to prepare, refine setups, and predict how the car will behave before they even arrive at the track. But for Lewis, something isn’t adding up.

“I don't like simulators in general, but I'm at the simulator every week in the build-up to this race and working on correlation constantly,” he said.

That word—correlation—is everything. If what you experience in the simulator doesn’t match what you get on track, you’re starting every race weekend on the back foot.

The Simulator Problem At Ferrari

Lewis didn’t hold back in explaining the issue.

“You go on it, you prepare for the track, you drive it and you get the car set-up to a certain place - and then you come to the track and that set-up doesn't work.”

That’s a fundamental problem. In Formula 1, setup direction is critical. If you arrive at the track with the wrong baseline, you spend valuable time correcting it instead of improving performance. And in a field as tight as F1 2026, that lost time can be the difference between fighting for a podium and settling for sixth. For Lewis, the solution might be simple—but also telling.

Stepping Away From The Simulator

In a surprising move, Lewis has decided to change his approach.

“I'm not going to go on the simulator between now and the next race,” he revealed.

That’s a big call. It’s not just about skipping a session—it’s about questioning a key part of Ferrari’s preparation process.

“I'll still go and hold meetings at the factory and stuff - but I'm just going to back away from it for a little bit and see. When we went to China I had the best weekend without the sim.”

That last line is crucial. China was one of Lewis’ strongest weekends. The car felt right. The performance was there. And notably, it came without heavy reliance on the simulator. For an experienced driver like Lewis, trusting instinct over simulation might actually unlock more performance.

Learning From Experience

This is where Lewis’ experience becomes invaluable. Younger drivers often rely heavily on data and simulation. But Lewis has something different—years of real-world knowledge, instinct, and racecraft.

He knows what a car should feel like.
He knows when something isn’t right.
And right now, he’s trusting that instinct.

In a sport that’s becoming increasingly data-driven, that human element could be Ferrari’s hidden advantage.

Looking At The Competition: Where Ferrari Are Losing Out

Lewis didn’t stop at the simulator. He also pointed directly at what rival teams are doing better.

“Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull are doing something different with the front wing to us. So we need to look into that to see whether or not there's something we can improve on.”

That’s a clear and direct observation. In Formula 1, small aerodynamic differences can have massive performance impacts. The front wing, in particular, plays a key role in airflow, balance, and overall car behavior.

“Just look at everyone else's wing and look at ours, you'll see it looks different.”

That’s not speculation—that’s a driver seeing something on track and questioning it.

The Importance Of Development In F1 2026

The beauty of Formula 1 is that nothing stays the same for long. Teams are constantly developing, refining, and improving.

“I don't know if that's necessarily the whole thing, but I wonder what that's doing, because others seem to have it and they improved.”

That’s the mindset Ferrari need right now. Curiosity. Analysis. Aggression in development. Because the teams ahead—Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull—are not standing still. They’re evolving. And Ferrari need to match that pace.

A Championship Still Wide Open

Despite the frustrations, it’s important to keep perspective. The F1 2026 season is far from over. There are still plenty of races left. Plenty of points to be won. Plenty of opportunities for the order to change. Lewis is still right there in the fight. Level with Norris. Within striking distance of the front.

But being “close” isn’t enough. To win in Formula 1, you need to take control.

What Ferrari Must Do Next

The path forward is clear, even if it’s not easy. Ferrari need to:

Fix simulator correlation issues
Improve aerodynamic performance, especially the front wing
Continue developing the car aggressively
Give Lewis a platform to attack consistently

Because right now, the ingredients are there. The driver is ready. The potential is visible. But the execution needs to improve.

Lewis Still Hungry, Still Pushing

If there’s one thing that stands out from Miami, it’s this—Lewis is still hungry. At 41, after everything he’s achieved in Formula 1, he’s still searching for more. Still questioning. Still pushing his team to improve. That’s what separates great drivers from legends.

He’s not accepting sixth place.
He’s not settling for “close enough.”
He’s demanding better.

The Miami Grand Prix might not have delivered the result Lewis wanted, but it may prove to be a turning point. Because moments like this force change. They force teams to look deeper, think harder, and act faster.

Ferrari now have a choice.

They can continue as they are—or they can respond. Because in Formula 1, standing still is the fastest way to fall behind. And with Lewis leading the charge, one thing is certain: Ferrari won’t stay quiet for long.
